British Columbia rewards HVAC companies that know which BC they are selling to. The Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island have mild, wet winters and a large condo and townhouse stock; the Interior and the North have long, cold heating seasons and more detached homes. An advisory package for a BC company starts by asking which of those markets drives its revenue, then plans marketing, operations and growth around it.
The BC market in numbers
BC's fuel mix is unusually balanced. In 2023, Statistics Canada reported natural gas as the primary heating energy for 42% of BC households and electricity for 36%, with electric baseboards the primary system in 28% of homes. That baseboard figure matters for growth planning: it is a large pool of homes where a heat pump is a comfort and cooling upgrade, not just a replacement.
For an owner, the practical questions are which segment you want more of (gas furnace replacements, ductless heat pumps for baseboard homes, or multi-unit work) and whether your crew, pricing and marketing actually match it.
Seasons and what they do to a plan
On the coast, winters are mild and wet, so the heating season is long but rarely severe, and heat pumps sell partly on summer comfort. In the Interior and the North, winters are much colder and the busy season sharper. A 90-Day Growth Plan for a Vancouver company can often run through late spring; for a Prince George or Kamloops company, early autumn is usually too close to the first cold snap. We set the quarter around your own call history, not a calendar.
Programs in play, as of October 2026
The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program offers income-qualified rebates for heat pumps and heat pump water heaters. Eligibility depends on household size, income and property value, and the top income level is limited to ground-oriented homes switching from gas, propane or oil to an electric heat pump. In June 2026 the federal and provincial governments also announced Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program delivery in BC, with no-cost retrofits through BC Hydro for about 6,000 households and dual-fuel and other measures through FortisBC for about 1,000.
For a growth plan, these programs raise two business questions: how much of your heat-pump pipeline depends on income-qualified customers, and how your office handles rebate paperwork without slowing down quoting. Confirm current terms with Better Homes BC and the utilities before relying on them.
Regulators to know
Technical Safety BC oversees gas, boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration, among other technologies, and licenses gas and electrical contractors. WorkSafeBC handles workplace safety and insurance. We name these so you know where to look; questions about licensing or compliance belong with them, not with us.
The BC business mix
BC HVAC companies range from one-van heat-pump specialists to multi-division firms covering gas, boilers and commercial work. The GasBoilers.ca case, a gas-boiler division built for CANRO Heat that now serves 26+ BC communities, is a BC example of the kind of division decision a package helps structure: separate brand or not, which communities first, and what capacity it needs.
Questions a BC package would ask
- What share of last year's revenue came from heat pumps compared with gas furnaces and boilers?
- How many of your heat-pump jobs depended on an income-qualified rebate, and how long did the paperwork take?
- Are you set up for multi-unit buildings, or only ground-oriented homes?
- How many hours a week do trucks spend driving between jobs?
- Does your website say clearly which BC communities you actually serve?
How we'd shape a BC package
A typical BC Business Diagnostic looks hard at the mix between heat-pump and gas work, the share of jobs tied to rebates, and how far trucks travel between jobs in sprawling service areas. Read the Canada-wide overview for comparison with other provinces, or see pricing for how packages are quoted.
Frequently asked questions
Is our home province an advantage for BC clients?
Only in convenience. Ali is based in Vancouver and has built many BC HVAC sites, including GasBoilers.ca, which serves 26+ BC communities. Packages are delivered the same way as elsewhere: in person or by video call, phone, text and email.
Should a BC heat-pump installer build its marketing around rebates?
Mention them, but don't build the business on them. The Energy Savings Program is income-qualified and its rules change, so a plan should treat rebates as a reason to call, not as the whole offer. Confirm current terms with Better Homes BC.
Who regulates gas and refrigeration work in BC?
Technical Safety BC covers natural gas, boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration, among other areas. We link the regulator but don't give compliance advice.
